About Us

Dr Geoff McLaughlin opened our practice in 1998, originally located on the corner of Barker Avenue and Canning Highway. Since then the practice has grown and developed and even moved locations! We are now situated at 383 Canning Highway in Como in a beautifully renovated 1920’s art deco building.

There was much anticipation to discover what the ‘white house’ on Canning Highway was to become and we are thrilled to see how many people love the final result! Geoff, along with his wife, was heavily involved in the design process and, as you will see when you visit us, they have kept many of the original features resulting in a contemporary and welcoming setting.

We have a large and friendly team of staff who will be on hand to assist you with any query you may have. From the moment you call and speak to one of our front office co-ordinators right through to enjoying a cup of coffee in our patient lounge, our aim is to offer you the highest level of care possible in a comfortable environment.

Preventive - Dental Hygiene

Just like a house needs to be built on sound foundation’s so too do your teeth. Healthy teeth need to be supported by healthy gums. We have a team of dedicated hygienists who will work with you to ensure that your gums are kept healthy and disease free. All of our experienced dental hygienists are trained to provide you with individual oral hygiene care and education. It is estimated that approximately 80% of Australians have mild to moderate gum disease (the infection of tissues supporting & surrounding your teeth) therefore we encourage regular visits with our hygienists along with daily brushing and flossing to ensure your mouth is healthy. By combining both of these you will be in a fantastic position to keep your teeth for life!

#
Tooth Whitening

Have you ever wanted brighter, whiter teeth? Over time our teeth can get discoloured due to a range of factors, such as drinking tea, coffee and smoking. At Lifetime Dental Care we can offer you a gentle, yet effective way of whitening your teeth. We begin by taking moulds of your teeth and then creating you your own customised whitening trays for your 'whitening take home kit'. We then give you all the information you require to complete the whitening treatment in the comfort of your own home. Tooth whitening at Lifetime Dental Care is extremely popular and safe…if having a whiter smile is important to you please contact us to make an appointment today.

#
Fillings (Restorations) & Fissure Sealants

We may all need to get a tooth restored from time to time, whether it is due to a tooth being broken or having decay. We use a fantastic material known as composite resin, which is tooth coloured; this material is available in many different shades. We carefully match your tooth shade so that we can create a natural looking result and ultimately a healthy, disease free tooth!

For our younger patients, Lifetime Dental Care offer fissure sealants. Quite simply a fissure sealant is a tooth coloured protective coating placed on those teeth where the pits and grooves of the teeth are too deep for the toothbrush bristles to reach and clean properly. It’s a simple, quick and comfortable procedure with no anaesthetic necessary.

#
Crowns & Bridges

A crown is used to entirely cover or "cap" a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant to provide a tooth-like shape and structure for function. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the colour of your natural teeth. Other materials include gold alloys. These alloys are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive.

Your dentist may recommend a crown to:

  • Replace a large restoration (filling) when there isn't enough tooth structure remaining
  • Protect a weak tooth from fracturing
  • Restore a fractured tooth
  • Attach a bridge (a crown with one or more teeth attached to replace a missing tooth)
  • Cover a dental implant (see dental implants)
  • Cover a discoloured or poorly shaped tooth
  • Cover & strengthen a tooth that has had root canal treatment
#
Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy may be necessary if the tooth nerve becomes inflamed or necrotic. This typically occurs if there is a large restoration or deep decay on the associated tooth which communicates with or is very close to the nerve tissue. Typically root canal therapy is done over two visits. The first is to prepare and clean the canal space and dress the canal space with a medicament. At the second appointment the medicament is cleaned from the canals and the space is filled with gutta percha (a type of rubber). In most cases, once the root canal therapy is complete a crown is necessary to protect the tooth from fracture.

#
Extractions

Sometimes we get the unfortunate news that we need to get a tooth removed, also known as an extraction.

At Lifetime Dental Care we aim to avoid extractions as we believe the retention of your natural teeth is nearly always the better option.

However, some of the reasons a tooth may require an extraction could be:

  • Extensive damage to a tooth through trauma or decay.
  • Severe gum disease due to poor oral health resulting in damaging the surrounding bone.
  • Teeth with no function where the bite and chewing maybe improved if removed.

Our dentists will make sure that you are in the most comfortable state during any extractions by using local anaesthetic, and if required intravenous sedation.

#
Intravenous Sedation

Some people can get nervous and anxious when they are told they require dental work. At Lifetime Dental Care our number one goal is to help you and your oral health and make your experience as pleasant as possible.

Intravenous sedation, also known as ‘twilight sedation’, is when our specialised anaesthetist attends your appointment and administers medication which puts you into a relax state throughout your treatment.

Please note that you will require someone to drive you to and from your appointment and you will need to be supervised for the rest of the day.

#
Dental Implants

We see many people who have a missing tooth (or teeth) leaving a gap that they are unhappy with. The tooth may have been lost due to a range of factors, from trauma or decay through to periodontal disease (gum disease). We are lucky enough to have amazing technology at hand to replace these missing teeth. Dental implants are now a very common procedure and allow the dentist to replace a tooth without having to touch the neighbouring teeth. The implant is an artificial root which is placed into your jaw by a periodontist (gum specialist) this is then left to heal. Once this has been achieved you will then come and see one of our dentists to create the tooth which is then permanently fixed to the implant. The result is a natural looking, fully functional tooth which will keep you smiling!

#
Dentures

Many people wear dentures these days and not just the elderly. Advances in dental technology allow us to create dentures which look more natural and fit better to improve appearance, oral health and lifestyle.

Acrylic or metal can be used for your denture depending on the best material for you.

At Lifetime Dental Care a partial or full denture can be custom made to your requirements. Missing teeth can be replaced with an upper or lower denture, or both.

Our dentist and laboratory technician will closely match the shape & colour for you for the most natural look possible.

#
Occlusal Splint Therapy

Do you ever wake up in the morning with a sore jaw, headaches or “tight” feeling teeth? If this sounds familiar then you may be grinding or clenching your teeth whilst you sleep or even during the day! ‘Bruxism’ or clenching/grinding can be very destructive to not only your teeth but also to the supporting structures and your jaw joint (temporomandibular joint). The cause of bruxism is not entirely clear but tends to be related to factors such as stress, hormonal changes, medications and genetics.

One of the ways we can treat bruxism and help alleviate your symptoms is to make you an occlusal splint designed specifically for your mouth. An occlusal splint is a precise acrylic appliance that is typically fabricated to fit the top jaw and serves to protect the teeth and jaw joint from further damage during bruxism.

Left untreated bruxism can lead to excessive chipping, and wear of your teeth, as well as long term problems with your jaw joint.

We offer a range of services to help improve the aesthetics of your smile. Perhaps you just want whiter and brighter teeth, or have an old mismatched dentistry that you want replaced. Or perhaps you're after a complete smile makeover!

Periodontal Treatment

Your gums are the foundation of your mouth and are the most important part of your dental care regime. Gingivitis and periodontal disease occur when dental plaque irritates and inflames the gums around the teeth. While bacteria are normal inhabitants of the mouth, if they build up to a large quantity, or below the gum line, they become harder to manage at home and can cause irreversible damage to the gums and bones that support your teeth.

We have a team of talented hygienists and therapists who are experts at cleaning your teeth and helping you maintain your gums.
